I’m Anthony, a freelance artist/plein air painter from England. I enjoy travelling around the world to find interesting places and translating when I see onto canvas. I started out with game and film design, getting a BA in Game Art at De Montfort University, but as time has gone on I’ve drifted more towards fine art, personal illustrations and building my own world/stories, the latter being a lifelong project which is still in the early stages, so more of that to come!

My travels for plein air paintings have currently been based around the Alps and the Balkans for 2 separate trips both lasting around 3 months and consisting of 90-100 paintings from each.

Common questions:

  • What paints do you use?
    For the majority of the plein air paintings I use Oils, but I will occasionally use watercolour

  • What brand of paints do you use?
    Most of them are Michael Harding, but theres a couple of tubes of Gamblin and Rembrandt Royal Talens in there

  • What paint thinner and medium do you use?
    I’ve only ever used zest it citrus thinner, and on the rare occasion of using a medium I’ll just go with linseed oil. If i need the first layer of a painting to dry fast and just be a wash then I’ll use Galkyd, but again it’s rare that I’ll use it, and I’ve tried out Liquin but I found it very fume heavy so I’m not a massive fan of using it.

  • What pencils do you use?
    For graphite I use Blackwings, and either a 0.3 or 0.5mm pentel mechanical pencil.
    For charcoal I use Generals (medium) or willow and vine charcoal, depending on the drawing and style I’m going for.

  • What easel do you use for plein airs?
    The base of the easel is a standard tripod camera with a hook for a backpack to weigh it down when its windy, then the easel itself I made a pochade setup out of some 3mm plywood, square dowel rods, a camera quick release and a T-nut. This is the video I used when making it.

  • What type of palette do you use?
    Just a 2mm glass sheet with a light grey backing on, so you have a natural base to compare the colour and value of what you’re working with.

  • What do you paint on?
    I started out with getting large sheets of 2mm MDF and sawed them down to size, then painted the front & sides with 2 layers acrylic gesso & sanded to finish, to seal the surface from moisture and give some tooth for the paint to stick to. But most of the time now I’ll use Figuras canvas paper, just because its thinner and lighter for travelling, and it’s already primed for use.

  • what colours do you use on your palette?
    The usual order of colours is;
    Titanium white 1 (MH)
    Cobalt blue (MH)
    Prussian blue (MH)
    Transparent oxide red (RT)
    Cadmium red (MH)
    Alizarin Crimson (G)
    Yellow Ochre (MH)
    Cadmium Yellow (MH)
    Burnt umber (MH)
    Then occasionally;
    Cadmium Yellow Lemon (MH)
    Ultramarine blue (MH)
    Cadmium orange (MH)
    Terra Rosa (WN)
    MH = Michael Harding, G = Gamblin, RT= Royal Talens, WN = Winsor & Newton
